AI in India’s Judicial System: Faster, Smarter Justice

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly reshaping how courts operate, and the impact of AI in India’s Judicial System is becoming more visible as new tools move from pilots to controlled rollouts. The Union Government recently detailed the scale of AI-led initiatives underway, highlighting how these technologies aim to reduce delays, support judges, and modernize courtroom workflows.

The Supreme Court’s eCommittee confirmed that several advanced tools such as Machine Learning, Optical Character Recognition, and Natural Language Processing, have already been integrated into the e-Courts platform. These systems help automate translation, filing, forecasting, and case scheduling while also enabling chatbots to communicate with litigants more clearly and consistently.

One of the most significant innovations is NIC’s Legal Research Analysis Assistant (LegRAA). Built by the Artificial Intelligence Division and the eCourts Centre of Excellence in Pune, LegRAA supports judges by conducting legal research, analyzing documents, and identifying relevant precedents. Because it reduces manual document review time, it is expected to enhance decision-making quality while allowing courts to address more cases each day.

Additionally, the new Digital Courts 2.1 platform brings several AI-powered tools into a single workflow. It integrates judgment databases, provides annotated document management, and introduces automated drafting templates for judicial officers.

Features such as voice-to-text dictation through ASR–SHRUTI and multilingual translation via PANINI enable the creation of orders and judgments more efficiently, helping reduce administrative overhead.

The Supreme Court has also partnered with IIT Madras to build AI and ML tools that detect defects in electronic filings. A prototype is currently being tested with 200 Advocates-on-Record to ensure accuracy before a broader rollout.

Tools for curing filing issues, extracting metadata, and integrating with the ICMIS case management system are under active evaluation, signaling a major shift toward smarter digital court systems.

Another ongoing experiment is SUPACE, or the Supreme Court Portal Assistance in Court Efficiency. Still in development, SUPACE aims to read case facts, perform intelligent searches, and surface relevant legal material automatically. While experimental, the project reflects the court’s long-term direction: using AI to make judicial processes faster, more consistent, and easier to manage.

Importantly, the government has emphasized that all AI initiatives remain in controlled pilots. High Courts will develop operational guidelines before any large-scale deployment, ensuring that AI is introduced responsibly, transparently, and without compromising judicial integrity. To manage this transition, the Supreme Court has established an AI Committee that oversees the conceptualization, evaluation, and monitoring of all AI integrations.

Under Phase III of the eCourts Project, launched in 2023–24, the government has allocated ₹53.57 crore for future technologies including AI and blockchain. This funding will support tools for improving administrative efficiency, forecasting pendency trends, automating routine processes, and enhancing service delivery across the judiciary.

Over time, these tools will move beyond pilots into broader adoption. The government confirmed that once validated, all AI applications built under the eCourts Project will be made available to courts across the country. This nationwide expansion marks a critical step toward building a judicial system that is modern, accessible, and capable of delivering timely justice at scale.
